New Year's Eve 2026 in Surat: Parties, Dry-State Rules and Tips
Updated 2026-10-12 Β· 6 min read Β· by the surat2go team
New Year’s Eve 2026 falls on a Thursday, and 1 January 2027 is a Friday, so the countdown opens a long weekend. In Surat the night looks different from Mumbai’s or Goa’s for one reason: Gujarat is a dry state. No hotel, club, restaurant or farmhouse can serve alcohol to the public, and carrying or drinking it without a permit is an offence. The city still goes out in force. It goes out to eat, to dance to DJs and live bands at ticketed, alcohol-free parties, and to drive the Dumas Road at midnight. Plan around the rules and it is an easy, family-friendly night.
No 2026 events had been announced when this guide was written on 12 October. Organisers usually publish from early December, and we will add them to our New Year’s Eve page as they do.
The dry-state rules, in plain words
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can a party serve alcohol? | No. Sale and service to the public are prohibited across Gujarat. |
| Can I bring my own? | No. Possessing or consuming alcohol without a permit is an offence. |
| I am visiting from another state. Can I drink? | Only with a visitor’s permit, which you apply for online, and only in private. |
| Where do permit holders buy? | From a small number of licensed shops in the state; Wikipedia’s summary of the rules counts 35. |
| Does the GIFT City exemption help? | No. The December 2023 relaxation applies only inside GIFT City near Gandhinagar. |
| What about Daman? | Alcohol is legal in the union territory of Daman, but Gujarat’s law applies the moment you cross back. |
The law is the Bombay Prohibition Act of 1949, which has applied in Gujarat since the state was created on 1 May 1960. Penalties are serious.
Two practical points follow. First, do not assume that a private gathering is exempt; the law applies at a farmhouse or a flat just as it does at a hotel. Second, do not drive back from Daman after drinking or with bottles in the car. In past years police across South Gujarat have set up checkpoints on the incoming roads around 31 December and used breath analysers on drivers and passengers.
What New Year’s Eve in Surat looks like
Ticketed parties
The big-format nights use the same kinds of venue that host garba in October: farm lawns and party plots around Vesu, Abhva and the Dumas side of the city, and hotel lawns. Expect DJs or a live band, a countdown, a buffet and mocktail counters. Tickets are usually sold per person or per couple, in tiers, and couple-only or family-only entry is common.
Hotel gala dinners
Hotels such as the Surat Marriott in Athwalines are where formal gala dinners are usually held, with a buffet, performances and a countdown. These suit mixed-age groups and anyone who wants a seat.
Restaurant countdowns
Most of the city simply books a table. The restaurant rows of the Dumas Road in Piplod, VIP Road in Vesu and parts of Adajan run set menus and stay open past midnight. Reserve early; tables for the evening of 31 December are the first to go.
The Dumas Road at midnight
Many people skip the ticket altogether and drive or walk the Dumas Road, ending at the beach. It is free and festive, and the traffic is slow. If this is your plan, go early and park once.
Something earlier in the evening
If a midnight crowd is not your thing, look at the entertainment listings in the last week of December. ‘The Magic of Mukesh’, a live musical night, is listed at the Sanjeev Kumar Auditorium for 26 December, and comedy rooms may add year-end shows. Our comedy page and nightlife listings will carry them.
Which kind of night suits you
| You want⦠| Choose | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| To dance | A ticketed DJ or live-band night | Farm and lawn venues in Vesu, Abhva and Dumas |
| A seat and a proper dinner | A hotel gala | Athwalines and the Dumas Road |
| A relaxed family evening | A restaurant set menu | Piplod, Vesu, Adajan |
| No ticket at all | The Dumas Road and beach | Piplod to Dumas |
| To be home by eleven | An early show, then dinner | Pal, Vesu, Athwalines |
What it will cost
No New Year’s Eve prices for 2026 had been published when we wrote this, so the best guide is what large ticketed nights cost in Surat during Navratri in October. A night at a premium garba ground was listed from βΉ1,999 to βΉ6,999 depending on the enclosure, while smaller ticketed nights at restaurants on the Dumas Road were about βΉ2,000. New Year packages usually include dinner, so do not expect them to be cheaper than that. Prices usually rise in the last week of December.
When you compare packages, check five things:
- What is included: dinner, mocktails, snacks, reserved seating.
- Entry rules: couples only, families only, minimum age.
- Entry and closing times, and whether re-entry is allowed.
- Parking and distance from the gate.
- Refund terms if the event is cancelled or moved.
Police, traffic and timings
The Surat police issue their New Year arrangements in the last days of December. The details change every year, so treat the points below as what to expect rather than as this year’s order.
- Vehicle checks. Expect checkpoints on the Dumas Road, around Vesu and at the city’s entry points, with breath analysers in use.
- Slow traffic. The Dumas Road is the pressure point from about 9 pm until well after midnight.
- Music cut-offs. Loudspeaker hours are set by notification. During Navratri this year the limit was midnight. Check what the police announce for 31 December, and note the end time printed on your ticket.
- Firecrackers. The Supreme Court’s 2018 order allows them at New Year only between 11:55 pm and 12:30 am.
- ID. Carry a government photo ID. Organisers ask for it, and so may the police.
Getting home
Surat’s metro is not open yet, and buses are thin late at night, so the ride home needs a plan.
- Book a cab before you leave home, or arrange a driver. App cabs surge after midnight.
- Share a car if you are going to a farm venue; parking areas are large but slow to empty.
- Stay near home if you can. Vesu and Piplod residents have the easiest night, since most venues are in the south-west of the city.
- If you are staying at a hotel, choose one near your party. The Dumas Road is a bad place to be stuck at 1 am.
New Year’s Day and the long weekend
With 1 January on a Friday, the weekend runs to Sunday 3 January. It is the best weather of the year.
- Dumas or Suvali Beach in the morning, before the crowds.
- The Science Centre, the fort and the zoo keep their normal Tuesday-to-Sunday schedule, so all three should be open from Friday to Sunday.
- Ponk and undhiyu are at their seasonal peak.
- VR Surat on the Dumas Road for films, shopping and lunch; details on the venue page.
- Surat LitFest follows a week later, on 8β10 January, and Uttarayan on 14β15 January. Our Uttarayan guide covers the next big date.
Planning timeline
- Early December: organisers announce events. Shortlist two or three.
- By 15 December: book. Early-bird tiers go first.
- Christmas week: confirm your table or tickets, and read the entry rules again.
- 29β30 December: look for the police advisory, and fix your transport.
- 31 December: eat something before you go, carry ID, and leave the car at home if you can.
For couples, our date night ideas work for the evening before the countdown. For what else is on, see Christmas events and this weekend in Surat.
