About Gopi Talav
Gopi Talav is a 16th-century artificial lake in the old city, built around 1510 by Malik Gopi, a wealthy merchant and governor of Surat under the Gujarat Sultanate, after whom Gopipura is named. Travellers of the 1600s wrote about it; Peter Mundy called it 'the Great Tancke of Surat' in 1628. It later ran dry and lay in ruins for almost three centuries. The Surat Municipal Corporation began reviving it in 2012 at a cost of about ₹22 crore, modelling the project on Ahmedabad's Kankaria Lake and filling it with piped Tapi water, and the first phase was inaugurated on 5 December 2015. The lakefront now has an amphitheatre, a fountain plaza, boating and themed zones, with day-to-day operations handled by a private operator.
