About Rang Upvan (C.C. Mehta Natya Gruh)
Rang Upvan, also called the C.C. Mehta Natya Gruh, is a municipal theatre in the old city that began as an open-air stage and is now covered by a steel roof. It holds nearly 1,400 people on stepped seating with a kota-stone floor, facing a covered wooden stage of about 127 sq m with dressing rooms behind. The Surat Municipal Corporation lists it for school cultural programmes, college musical evenings, drama, classical and folk dance, ras-garba, ghazal and qawwali nights, mushairas, poetry gatherings and magic shows. Bookings are handled by the manager's office at Gandhi Smruti Bhavan in Nanpura, between 10:30 am and 2 pm on working days. The second name honours the playwright Chandravadan C. Mehta, who was born in Surat.
